The CBC Calgary Reads Big Book Sale
We are currently looking for volunteers for the 2018 CBC Calgary Reads Big Book Sale, our signature fundraising event. If you are interested in volunteering for this event, please complete the following form.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I volunteer with my family? Much of Calgary Reads’ work involves children and youth and so we appreciate that children want to volunteer with their parents at the book sale. Children between the ages of 13 and 16 are welcome to volunteer with full adult/parental supervision. You will be asked to complete a waiver form for each child. We do not have the capacity to safely accommodate children under the age of 13.
What can I expect to do as a volunteer? The main jobs are sorting and then setting the books on tables for display. If you are interested in one specific category we will try to accommodate that.
What should I bring when I volunteer? You will likely be standing on the concrete floor throughout your shift so wear comfortable and sturdy shoes. Our space can be a bit chilly and so bring a fleece or layer. We provide some snacks during breaks and ask that you bring your own water bottle. We don’t have a place to secure valuables so leave valuables locked in the trunk of your car or don’t bring at all.
Where can I park – as a volunteer/during the sale? For sorting and set up days, the Calgary Curling Club parking lot can accommodate our volunteers. Parking on sale days is much more challenging. There is some 2-hour street parking west of the Calgary Curling Club in the Community of Sunnyside and there is parking at the City of Calgary parking lot #59 at 200 Memorial Drive N.W. just east of the Curling Club (with a convenient pathway connecting the two). The City of Calgary lot is a pay lot and costs $.50 per hour with a maximum stay of 3 hours. On Saturdays, the maximum fee is $2.00.
