The nourish partner agencies
Calgary’s children – whole, happy and nourished in mind, body and spirit.
Nourishing a child’s mind is as essential as feeding his or her body. What happens to children’s brains in their earliest years shapes the adults they become, the success they achieve and the contributions they make to our economy and society. But too many of our children today are not getting the nourishment they need.
It takes a village to raise a child, and even in a city of abundance like Calgary there are children and families in need of extra sustenance from our village. Coming to school without exposure to words and and books is just as hard as coming to school without food or enriching life experiences. It makes it harder for children to learn and reach their full potential.
The Nourish partner agencies are collaborating on an innovative idea to ensure that all children in our city have the necessary tools to nurture their bodies, minds and spirits. Together, we can take our public action campaign on the road to ensure all children thrive.
Nourishing the Mind:
Calgary Reads offers the only in-school programs in the Calgary area for struggling readers in kindergarten and grades 1 and 2, along with their families. Calgary Reads is focused on this window of literacy learning and that focus is a reason for its success.
Nourishing the Body:
Brown Bagging for Calgary’s Kids provides Calgary school children with more than just a meal — but also with essential nutrients to allow them to learn and be active.
The ’NSTEP Eat Walk Live program provides fun, interactive nutrition and activity education to every student and teacher within the whole school community.
Nourishing the Spirit:
Humanity In Practice (h!p) gives children simple, flexible ways to volunteer with Calgary agencies. This fun program runs October through May and is a convenient way for groups to plant the seeds of volunteerism together.
Kids Up Front Foundation provides access to arts, culture, sport and recreation for children who otherwise would not have the opportunity.
