Through its partnership with the Calgary Food Bank, Calgary Reads is providing much needed literacy support by giving families free books along with their food hampers.   Every month, literacy volunteers distribute books to food bank clients, who are grateful for the support to help develop their children’s love of reading.

Wendy, a Calgary Reads volunteer, shares an experience from a recent distribution day at the Food Bank.   After greeting a family, Wendy was helping a 6-year old boy choose a special book to bring home.  He was intent on finding a Spiderman book and Wendy understands the importance of children choosing their own books.  “We rifled through our inventory and found wonderful books on trucks, bugs and dinosaurs, but no Spiderman books.  He accepted these with a smile and polite thanks, before moving with his family to the food distribution queue.”   Moments later, Wendy found a slim Spiderman book tucked into a crate beneath the table.  Running back to the family with this find in hand, she describes the joyful, genuine smile that greets her.  “I think it’s fair to say that moment might have been the highlight of his day.  I know it was the highlight of mine.”

The book bank partnership serves the missions of both organizations.  Calgary Reads can ensure that children of food bank families have access to free, age-appropriate books and the Calgary Food Bank sees the partnership as a way to address one of the root cause of hunger – poor literacy and lack of education. Volunteers like Wendy make a difference to the many children who are growing up without books of their own.    Your gift can help.

  1. I have 3 boxes of books from a library that is downsizing. They aren’t children’s books though. Canbuou still benefit from them?

  2. Thank you for reaching out. We cannot accept non-childrens books at this time. During the spring we host the CBC Calgary Reads Big Book Sale and we do accept other books on our book donation days.
    Thank you,
    Allison
