Ignite a child’s passion for reading
Our wee read program is about getting young students in kindergarten and grade one excited about reading. Volunteers visit schools to share their love of books by reading aloud, playing vocabulary games and talking about stories that inspired them when they were children.
wee read volunteers can be individuals or members of a corporate, school or community group. They receive Calgary Reads training and usually commit to one 30-minute session a week for eight weeks during the school year.
The number of wee read volunteers who shared the joy of reading with 3,015 kindergarten and grade one students in 2016-17.

“Students in our kindergarten program love the time to read one-on-one with an adult. They enjoy the modelling of reading and the discussion time with the volunteer. It has reinforced the importance of reading and instilled a love of reading in our new readers.”
